I love Cupcakes. I love decorating cupcakes. To me the best part is decorating. It is an art. I am not fond of fondant though. In my opinion, Pipping frosting is the way to go. You might have already known this from other posts or my cupcake/cake page. I love to see the faces on people when they see a cupcake I’ve decorated. And the enjoyment of them eating a cupcake that is filled with flavour. I typically only eat 1 or sometimes two. Not at the same time of course. The rest are shared with others. What I don’t like to hear after is this, “Wow. Thos were really good muffins!” Hello! They are cupcakes, not muffins! I took cupcakes into college one day and a sweet little old lady said, “Dear, those were lovely muffins.” Then a fellow male student said, “I really liked your muffins.” So the fellow student heard it, but I didn’t have the heart to correct the little old lady.
The difference? Cupcakes are a cake. They have frosting. They are typically sweet. They are pretty. You don’t put butter on them. You eat many at once.
Muffins are a bread. They can be sweet. They can be healthy. They typically don’t have frosting on them. Except for my Moms banana muffins which are really banana cupcakes. You can put savoury herbs and spices in them and it’s ok. You put butter on them. You typically only eat one at a time although if they are really good then they turn into more than one.
So why do people have a problem calling cupcakes muffins? I think it is the fault of places like Tim Hortons (a Canadian Coffee Shop) who makes sweet muffins like chocolate chip and call it a muffin and not a cupcake – although there is a lack of icing. People just don’t understand the difference – the main one being cake and bread.
Cupcakes are a mini cake. Muffins are little breads and what you have at breakfast and are more of a bread. Although that wouldn’t stop someone from having a cupcake for breakfast! So the next time you enjoy a cupcake, be sure to say, “Wow, that was a great cupcake!” Not sure – if it has frosting it’s most likely a cupcake. I’d rather you call my muffin a cupcake than my cupcake a muffin.
Do you get them mixed up? Leave a comment below. I’d love to hear from you!
*** This is part of a Blogging Challenge that I participated with fellow bloggers. To see their blog posts head over to Dustn.tv I’ll include a direct link once he puts up the post. The challenge was to try and write 4 posts in one hour. We had to include a royalty free photo and write 300 – 500 words (or more). We also had to have one thought flow throughout the post. I was able to write 3 posts. When they go live I will update this page with links to those posts. The photos in this post are my originals. ***
