hens, hobby farm

I have my own hens now.  My sister gave me 4 of her hens.  White ones – specifically Leghorns or to me “the ladies” or “whities”.  Now that I know what type of hen they are I can find out more about them.  Anyways, it’s been interesting learning about their habits.  They were trained to go in the coop by themselves at dusk.  They just did it.  Now they are in a new home and for the first few weeks they have been doing this.

But for about the last 5 days their sleeping habits have changed.  It started off with two of the hens choosing a place outside. Continue reading →

I’ve been discovering superfoods lately.  Today I want to tell you about Quinoa – pronounced Keen-wa.  My sister introduced me to Quinoa and I had it for the first time when a friend from school had made quinoa “lasagna”.  She substituted the pasta with the quinoa.  It was actually pretty good.  I hadn’t had it again until the other day when I made lunch for my sister and one of her co-workers.  To my surprise it was delicious and I didn’t have a problem with the texture (yup, I’m one of those texture eaters – it could be the best tasting thing in the world but if the texture is odd I can’t eat it – hello gag reflux).  All three of us thoroughly enjoyed the meal – seafood fried quinoa (a spin on chicken fried rice).

Quinoa has been used widely among vegetarians those who are gluten-intolerant.  It’s high in protein and many other daily nutrients one needs.  Quinoa also is good for those trying to loose weight Continue reading →

Keep Calm & Carry On: GPS Adventure

25 Saturday Aug 2012

Keep Calm and Carry On.  The saying originated from the Government of the United Kingdom in 1939 as the Second World War broke out.  It’s a saying that you see everywhere now after it was rediscovered in 2000 at a second hand bookstore.  Twelve years later and it is probably stronger then ever with all kinds of parody’s that use the saying, like the one I found at the Cows store in PEI which reads “Keep Calm and Graze On” and the crown is on top of a cow head.  I was reminded of this saying last Sunday when my boyfriend and I decided to trust the GPS after we missed our turn off.  The GPS lead me to need to Keep Calm and Carry On.  Maybe you can tell by the picture what happened! I say Kids, but it can be for anyone who doesn’t like eating veggies.  The problme is that adults will still say no but the kids will think it’s awesome and want to eat them.  The trick – get them involved in the process!  What do I mean by that?  The answer Continue reading →

Importance of the Scale

I know a lot of you won’t agree with me on this one, but for some people the scale is important in their road to a healthier lifestyle.  I’ve been thinking about it lately.  During the Dukan Diet you were on the scale everyday.  Now that I’ve moved I don’t have a scale, and I have realized that it was an important tool for me.

It’s not about obsessing.

It helps keep you on target – along with others ways to measure.

A lot of people think that going on the scale every day is a little bit Continue reading →

Dukan Diet: Keeping it Off

04 Saturday Aug 2012

Have I kept it off – the 11 lbs I lost while attempting the Dukan Diet?  Am I the same weight?  Did I gain?  Did I loose?  Did I keep doing the suggestions from the “Phase for Life“?

Let’s see  – well I didn’t go back to my original weight.  I didn’t go past my original weight, which can happen when people “diet”.  You know, the Yo-Yo affect of dieting.  I didn’t follow everything in the Phase for Life to a T.  So I think that I did pretty well for where I am at right now.  I’ve been eating what I want, only exercising when I feel like it.  I must say that I don’t eat like I did before I took part in the Dukan Diet.  I say no before I am too full it hurts and I don’t eat as many sweets as I was either.  So What’s the verdict? Continue reading →
