Origami Sunday #2

07 Monday Mar 2011

I know, I have really slacked in the Origami making!  I totally missed last week.  I know how excited you all were to see what I created!  I created nothing!  But don’t worry.  I didn’t leave you hanging for today!  I did build some origami today.

Siamese Cat

I did well until I got to a picture frame.  You would think that a picture frame would be easy.  There were quite a few folds.  I am still learning what all the different arrows and dotted lines and the other shapes that indicate how to fold the paper.  Next week I will include some pictures of the “lingo” in order to know how to make origami.

I didn’t make a lot today, but it is a start.  I hope that I will do at least one each day this week.  Check back next Sunday to see if I really did it!

Mr. Gold Fish; Mr. Turtle; Mr. Dog; Mr. Bird
They decided to have a photo shoot together.

Join me next week, right here for more blogging.
Did you know, that you can send in your origami designs and they might get in to next year’s origami calendar?

Origami Sunday

This isn’t as random as you might think.  My friend, Kristin, has turned me on to Origami.  It started with cranes when she had a goal of making 1000 cranes and many of her friends and family helped her on this venture, including me.  There is a reason behind it.  If you want to find out more you can visit her blog at craigkristinsimmons.blogspot.com  It is a piece of her story.

I am visiting my wonderful friend this weekend and their house is filled with calendars.  Why?  Well her brother ended up with a couple bags full of free calendars after helping out his fiance at work one Sunday afternoon.  She worked at a calendar store.  My first night at her place she had a present waiting in the room where I would be staying.  Guess what it was?  A calendar!  Not just any calendar, it was an origami calendar.  How exciting!

Tonight we decided to origami it up.  Now, this is a calendar, so that means there is one for each day.  I just got the calendar two days ago and this is the first night that we did any of them.  What does that mean?  I have a lot of catching up to do!  Each Sunday I will be catching up on the previous month and a half.  I will try to keep up from now on so I don’t get behind again.

The plan is to feature some of my favourites or ones that were hard to do.  We are called to rest and relax on Sunday, which is what I plan to do while I create origami.  If you never have tried it before, I have plenty to share!

Check back every Sunday to see what creations have been formed by my paper folding fingers!

Paper Cup – I’m sure that you could really use this a couple times!

Solitude and Silence

17 Thursday Feb 2011

“The seeking out of solitary places was a regular practice for Jesus.  So it should be for us.”
 – Foster

Times Jesus found solitude:

  •  40 days in the desert (Matt 4:1-11)
  •  Before he chose the 12 disciples (Luke 6:12)
  •  Before John the Baptist’s death (Matt 14:13)
  •  After the feeding of the 5 thousand (Matt 14:23)
  •  After a long night of work (Mark 1:35)
  •  Jesus told his disciples to go to a lonely place after a time of preaching and healing (Mark 6:31)
  •  After the healing of a leper (Luke 5:16)
  •  with three disciples (Matt. 17:1-9)
  •  and I am sure there are more

Since Jesus did this and we are to be like Christ and have an attitude like him, we should do this too.  Let me tell you, it isn’t easy.  Well, maybe it is for you, but it wasn’t for me.  I don’t have a problem with being alone.  It was hard doing the listening part.  Being silent.  Yes, I have been silent before, but I am usually doing something while I have been silent.  So this time I had some silence and listening.  I didn’t do it for hours, but it did happen, and it was good.

Also on my little retreat I did some much needed praying, reading, walking, admiring God’s creation, sleeping, soaking in the tub, singing, and drinking tea.  If you get a chance to go away, even just for the day or even a few hours, then take it and relax and enjoy God.

Gillian for a Day

11 Friday Feb 2011

Today my alarm didn’t go off so I didn’t have time to do the almost hour workout this morning.  My workout partner is going at it tonight (which I can’t make it), so I decided to go back to Gillian Michaels “30 Day Shred.”  This is only a 20 minute workout, so I could fit in before work.

I wondered if it would be any easier than it was when we first played the DVD in November.  I decided that I would stick with Level 1, although I’m sure after a month of Insanity I could have jumped right to Level 3!  Really, I wanted to see the difference.  Would I feel the same about the video or would I find it easier.

The verdict:  EASY!

It was a really good workout, but definitely not as hard as the first time around.  I could actually do some  push ups (although still only bend my elbows half way).  When I started I couldn’t do any pushups.  I also was faster at the cardio section and found myself making them a bit harder by combining them with what Shaun T does.  It was also nice doing regular crunches instead of the V ab ones that Shuan T makes us do!  Those are killers.

There is one weight exercise that I could not do well when I had weights in my hands, and I found that it I had more balance to do them properly this time around.  The move is anterior hand raises (hold the waits in front of you and lift up to eye level – image to the right) and side lunges.  It must be all of those squats and lunges that we do too many times with Insanity.

This is what I am thinking.  I want to keep up with Insanity, but sometimes I have energy later in the day if we do it in the morning or if we are going to do it at night, I would still like to wake up early in the morning.  I’m thinking that on those days I feel like I can do a little extra, I might pop in Gillian’s DVD and do it up.  It’s only 20 minutes.  I’m sure that by the time I’m done Insanity, 30 Day Shred will be a wonderful treat of a workout!

The 5 Love Languages

10 Thursday Feb 2011

4    Words of Affirmation
12   Quality Time
2    Receiving Gifts
4    Acts of Service
8    Physical Touch
Quality Time
In Quality Time, nothing says “I love you” like full, undivided attention.  Being there for this type of person is critical, but really being there – with the TV off, fork and knife down, and all chores and tasks on standby – makes you feel truly special and loved.  Distractions, postponed activities, or the failure to listen can be especially hurtful.

I thought that physical touch would come out the highest for me, because that is definitely something that I would consider to be a top love language, but according to the assessment it is quality time.  Now that I think about it, that makes sense.  I really don’t like it when I am talking to someone and they are doing something else at the same time.  Are they really listening to me?  I also get distracted when I am trying to listen to someone and I do other things at the same time.  I would prefer to sit at the table to eat so that I can talk with the person instead of in front of the tv or wherever else.  I guess I would have to say that I like the persons undivided attention or I feel like they are not listening or they don’t care what I am talking about.

What happens when I feel this way?  I stop talking.  I don’t share.  I pull away.  Why would I continue to talk about something that I feel the person clearly does not appreciate or is interested in.   I realize some people are great multi-taskers, and that is great.  I just feel more loved when I have undivided attention of the person who is close to me.  Is that not so hard to ask?  I don’t think so.

It’s interesting that the others are so low.  I like to show others love by giving them little things or by doing things for them, but they are not high on my list.  I guess I prefer quality time and physical touch.  I already thought this about myself, but it was nice to do the assessment to confirm my thinking.

What’s your love language?  Visit www.5lovelanguages.com/assessments/love/  to find out.  I would be curious to know.
P.S.  Just because receiving gifts is only a 2 doesn’t mean I don’t like getting gifts! 🙂

Recovery Week

04 Friday Feb 2011

Posted by jackmansjourney in exercise

Month 1 is over!  I am now in the recovery week of the 2 month program.  It is a chance to recover the muscles, but I think it is getting us prepared for the much harder month that is ahead of us … on Monday to be exact.

You might think, “Oh recovery week, must be easy!”   I find it just as hard as the other work out DVDs.  It is not as intense in the sense that it is fast and lots of exercises, it is the fact that the moves are slower and more concentrated and you hold moves for longer and working on core balance.  I still am sweating by the end and I have found it harder on my knees and legs, so I need to be careful.  I’m not sure if it is because we are doing some exercises that didn’t really work certain leg muscles before or if it is because we are holding the moves longer or maybe it is because there isn’t as much stretching.  I’m just not sure on that one.

One more day left, then a day off, then back to it on Monday.  We go from our shortest work out of 36 min and the longest of 45 minutes to the shortest being 40 min and the longest being 65 minutes!  And on Fit Test days, we have an extra workout making it 86 min long!  WHAT!?  Maybe we will split that day up.  The Fit Test is such a work out in itself!

I need to continue to work on getting to bed early so I can get up early enough to be awake for the workout and have a little bite to eat so I have energy to workout!  Definitely that was my problem this morning!
